RES production increased by 5% from 2020 to 2021. However, post-pandemic demand growth meant that the share of renewables in electricity generation increased by just 0.1%, from 37.4% to 37.5% in 2021.

Wind and hydro generated more than two-thirds of net generation (37% and 32% respectively), according to Eurostat. The rest came from photovoltaics (15%), solid biofuels (7%) and other RES (8%).

Geographically, the first countries were Austria and Sweden, where three quarters of the electricity came from RES. Denmark (62.6%), Portugal (58.4%) and Croatia (53.5%) followed.
