Wind power connected to the grid increased to 5 GW. At the end of the first half of 2023, the total wind power in Greece amounted to 4,935,4 MW. This information comes from the six-year Wind Energy Statistics in Greece published by the Greek Scientific Association of Wind Energy (ELETEN).

According to Statistics, in the first six months of 2023, 77 new wind turbines with a total allocated capacity of 252,5 MW were added to the network. This represents an investment of more than 260 million euros. An increase of 5.4% compared to the end of 2022.

Growth of wind power in Greece accelerated in the first half of 2023, with the number of new wind turbines connected to the network exceeding the total number of 2022. This acceleration is due to the gradual completion of large wind investments, thanks to the efforts of, the scientific world and the wind energy professionals active in Greece.

By the end of the first half of 2023, more than 600 MW of new wind farms were under construction or contracted. The vast majority of these parks are expected to be connected to the network within the next 12 months. Furthermore, another 450 MW are either in the notarization phase or on the verge of construction. We must also add another 400 MW that have been selected through tenders and have filed the required warranty units, but do not belong to any of the previous categories. As a result, total wind power is expected to reach close to 6.5 GW over the next three years.

Of course, if bureaucratic and other problems are overcome, this power can increase even more.

At the regional level, Sterea Greeceins the lead in wind installations, with 2.110 MW (43%) of total wind power. Followed by the Peloponnese with 639 MW (13%), while Eastern Macedonia – Thrace is in the third place with 534 MW (11%).
