The total wind capacity in Greece at the end of June 2022 was 4,534 MW. This results from the six-monthly Wind Energy Statistics announced by the Hellenic Wind Energy Scientific Association (ELETAEN).

Based on Statistics, during the first half of 2022, 28 new wind turbines were connected to the grid with a total output power of 83.1 MW. This size is not significantly different from the capacity installed in the 2nd half of 2021 and is 3 times less than the capacity of the 1st half of the previous year.

The slowdown in growth in the last two semesters is due to increased bureaucracy and administrative barriers that delay investment, as well as increased construction times for projects, the Union says.

However, it is noted that at the end of June 2022 over 650 MW of new wind farms were under construction, the majority of which are expected to be connected to the grid within the next 12 months.

The geographical distribution

At the level of Regions, Central Greece remains at the top of wind installations since it hosts 1861 MW (41%), followed by Peloponnese with 639 MW (14%) and Eastern Macedonia – Thrace where there are 534 MW (12%).
