At EU level, the share of gross final energy consumption from renewable sources reached 19.7% in 2019, according to data published today by Eurostat, the EU statistical office.

With more than half of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption, Sweden (56.4%) had by far the highest share among EU Member States in 2019, compared to Finland (43.1%) and Latvia. (41.0%), Denmark (37.2%) and Austria (33.6%).

At the opposite end of the scale, the lowest rates of renewable energy were recorded in Luxembourg (7.0%), Malta (8.5%), the Netherlands (8.8%) and Belgium (9.9%).

An additional fourteen Member States are exceeding their target for 2020, including Cyprus which reached 13.8% for 2019.

In addition, six countries are approaching their targets: Hungary, Austria and Portugal (0.4 percentage points from their national targets), Germany (0.6), Malta (1.5) and Spain (1.6). ).

By far, France (5.8 per cent), the Netherlands (5.2 per cent), Ireland and Luxembourg (4.0 per cent) are still far from their targets.
