Solar energy will become the largest source of energy in Europe, in terms of installed capacity, within the next five years, according to the head of the International Energy Agency (International Energy Agency).

Speaking at the SolarPower Solar Energy Conference, Fatih Birol said: “Our numbers show that Europe is willing and able to pursue a net-zero target. In the next five years, solar energy will be the number one an energy source in terms of installed power for electricity generation in Europe, surpassing any other form of energy ”.

The head of the IEA clarified that the relevant estimates are included in the forthcoming report of the Organization, the well-known World Energy Outlook report, which will be released on October 13. Without going into further detail, he merely stressed that governments are increasingly recognizing that photovoltaics are the cheapest form of generating new electricity in many parts of the world.

Finally, SolarPower Europe estimates that installed solar power capacity is expected to increase from 180.1 GW to 276.8GW in EU Member States, including the United Kingdom, by 2023, significantly higher than 131.9 GW at the beginning of the year.
