The increase of the installed power limit for roof photovoltaics is being examined by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, as revealed by the competent Minister Costas Skrekas yesterday in a discussion of a relevant topical question in Parliament.

In particular, the Minister stated that the Ministry is considering increasing the limit from the current 6 kW, to 10 kW. On this issue, the political leadership of the Ministry is in discussions with representatives of the investment community and the owners of photovoltaic roofs, emphasizing, at the same time, that the intention of the government is to provide more incentives and tools to have a significant development of this technology. .

Note that the support scheme for photovoltaics on roofs for the sale of electricity in the system and not for self-generation and net metering has expired at the end of 2019 and does not exist today. In order for the support scheme to work again, a Ministerial Decision must be issued, a fact that is expected in the next period, according to what the Minister stated. Transitionally, with the Ministerial Decision 26/3/2020, the Reference Price (tariff) for such facilities was set again at 87 euros per Megawatt hour.

Therefore, the forthcoming Ministerial Decision comes to incorporate – if this is the case – any increase in the permissible installed capacity limit and to put into operation the support scheme for such facilities.

It should be emphasized, however, that this investment in photovoltaic roof without net metering at 87 euros per megawatt-hour, gives a lower return than today gives a corresponding with net metering estimated by market executives at 100 to 110 euros if properly sized . Therefore, the program that will be activated will be of financial interest mainly for those who have the space and the ability to put the maximum of the allowed power without having a large consumption in the house where they will install it.

It is also worth noting that roof photovoltaics currently cover only 1% of the country’s RES production, a percentage that is recognized as too small and should be increased. The perception of the political leadership of the Ministry is the utilization of this technology to strengthen the “energy democracy”, with the active participation of the citizens in the shaping of the energy mix.
