The EU and Member States are beginning to recognize in practice the role that energy storage must play from now on for the expansion of RES.

According to PV-Magazine, a tender was recently held in Italy where 95 megawatts of power were offered for storage units. Respectively, in Portugal a relevant auction with photovoltaics with storage is expected, while at the same time the support is intensified in Germany.

In the case of Britain, there are auctions that continue again after a year and in the most recent one was awarded 120 megawatts for installation until 2023-24. Similarly, 127 megawatts were offered in Ireland by the country’s network operator.

It is noted that large batteries amount to less than 2 gigawatts worldwide and three quarters of them are lithium batteries. A recent study by the Commission estimated that the EU will build 67 gigawatts by 2030 to support its goals, but warned that network development could reduce the number.

In the legal part, the legislation passed last year in the EU. provides that managers can only invest in storage under strict conditions, while eliminating discrimination against these technologies.

Finally, in the financial part, the EIB has announced that it will channel 1 billion. euros for projects with batteries in 2020, while the EU Innovation Fund will provide loans of 10 billion. euros by 2030.
